+ Brief

Chemical pollution has been a festering issue for decades, occasionally prompting resolute action but only recently has the scale of chemical pollution become more apparent.

Working with Economist Impact and The Nippon Foundation to launch the Back to Blue initiative, how could we reframe the conversation around ocean pollution from one focused on plastics to a broader dialogue encompassing chemicals and other contaminants, while driving stakeholders to further explore the issue?

+ Solution

We distilled Back to Blue’s 60,000 word ocean chemical report into a 4-minute impact film and series of social media teasers targeting key stakeholders with the aim of driving traffic to the Back to Blue website, and driving engagement at Economist Impact events.

Doing extensive visual research and crafting a visceral creative direction, we developed an authentic script turning key findings into narrative arcs to give data points and scientific evidence a human and emotional context for audiences to engage with.

We identified and utilised a blend of cinematic visuals, realistic archival footage and interviews with experts to create a sense of urgent realism and used motion graphic design to underscore key findings and messages - all of which were tied together with a dynamic style of editing, creating consistency across a wide range of visual and audio elements.

The Invisible Wave

A concept film for Back To Blue Initiative by Economist Impact & Nippon Foundation’s latest 60,000-word white paper “The Invisible Wave -  - Getting to zero chemical pollution in the ocean”. It highlights how chemicals, vital to modern life, are exerting a negative impact on our oceans and ourselves - the deterioration of our marine environments, and the need to shift to safer, greener chemicals production – and more responsible usage and disposal.
